Getting Around Lake Como Made Easy

Bus (C10) along the western shore from Como to Colico

The C10 bus is the simplest form of transport for connections between Como and Sala Comacina, and further on to Menaggio, and beyond, terminating at Colico.  The current C10 timetable is posted at all bus stops.  Stops are designated with a green sign post.

To alight in Sala Comacina when coming from Como, be sure to press the bell after Colonno as you pass the Taverna Bleu signage on the right.  There is only one stop in Sala, outside the bakery.

To hail the bus from Sala into Como, wait at the C10 stop opposite the Sala village bakery.

The thrilling vistas and panoramas above the hedgerows as the bus rounds each bend are truly breathtaking: it is no wonder that ever since Roman times, poets and authors have raptured over this subliminal setting.

The usual route for the C10 is designated Panoramica and follows the faster, wider high road.  However, twice daily in season the C10 route travels along the Lago route, using the narrow route along the lakeshore through Lalio and Carate Urio, past George Clooney's house.

Purchasing Bus Tickets

Bus tickets must be purchased prior to boarding at newsagents or Tabacci which display a 'T' sign outside (such as in Sala and other lakeside villages), or at the bus depot in Como.  The fare depends on the distance.  Fares range from Tariffa 1 to 6.  As most ticket sellers speak little English, it is advisable to have the route written down in advance for convenience.  When buying multiple tickets note the route that each ticket will be used for on the back for easy reference later.  Tickets are not dated and so may be used on any future date.

Lake Ferry

Ferries are a wonderful way to see the lake from another vantage point where classic Italian lake-images of sparkling water, splendid water-side villas, Baroque gardens, and tiered honey-coloured villages set against a panorama of green or distant snow-covered mountains create a stunning panorama.

A day excursion ticket for the central lake area Bigletto Giornaliero per Il Centro Lago will allow day-long use of ferries to view the most beautiful villages of the lake with visits to Bellagio, Varenna, Tremezzo, Cadenabbia, and Lenno.  In this way you will be able to enjoy stops in each town to enjoy the sights, and linger over refreshments without the cares of driving.

Purchasing Ferry Tickets

Ferry Tickets are purchased from ferry ticket booths located at each ferry stop.  Note that there is no ticket booth in Sala Comacina or on Isola Comacina (purchase tickets on board), and that ferries do stop at both locations when scheduled so in season. Please make yourself known to the crew when wishing to alight at these less frequented stops.

Seasonal Timetables

As they offer public transport, buses and ferries operate all year round, however timetables are seasonal.  Larger ferries also accommodate cars.

The seasonal ferry timetable can be viewed here:

Water Taxi

Sala Comacina has its own water taxi pontile in Piazza Mateotti, used primarily to access Isola Comacina.  However, Angelo the ferryman will also be pleased to bring you to Villa Barbianello further up the lake near Lenno.

Other bus routes

At Menaggio the C10 bus connects with the C12 for Lugano in Switzerland, some 20 km away.

The C30 runs from Como to Bellagio along between the east and west branches of the lake.

The C40 travels between Como and Lecco (on the other foot of the lake).
